Mission and Goals
SSD Mission
The Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) office exists to assist the university with its mission of promoting students' academic success, personal growth, and development of life skills. SSD works to ensure that students with disabilities receive equal access to curricular and co-curricular opportunities in the academic community, in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The SSD office accomplishes its mission by:
- Establishing clearly defined policies and procedures to address the responsibilities of both the university and the student eligible for accommodations
- Incorporating student learning and student development through programs and services to enhance overall educational experiences
- Promoting greater awareness and understanding of students with disabilities among students, faculty, and the campus community
- Facilitating the transition of students with disabilities from high school to college to the workplace, fostering personal growth and opportunity, and improving the quality of life
SSD Goals:
- Assist students with disabilities in becoming fully integrated into the university community.
- Promote greater awareness and understanding of disabilities and the needs of students with disabilities at Virginia Tech.
- Facilitate the transition of students with disabilities from high school to college to the workplace.
