ATTENTION: PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION REGARDING AIR CONDITIONED RESIDENCE HALLS BEFORE YOU SUBMIT ANY FORMS:
Virginia Tech has four air-conditioned residence halls. These building do NOT have individually controlled central air-conditioning units in student rooms. Residents cannot control availability of heat or air-conditioning within their rooms, or in the residence halls.
Because the air-conditioned halls are equipped with a 2-pipe system, either the heat is on throughout the building, or the air-conditioning is on throughout the building. When seasons change, temperature and long-range weather predictions dictate when heat and air-conditioning are turned on and off. The nature of the 2-pipe system prevents immediate switching from one to the other. Residents usually can expect several weeks when both heat and air-conditioning are shut down, depending on local climate conditions. During this interval, the pipe system is cooling or warming in anticipation of the upcoming seasonal requirements.
In typical circumstances, the residence halls are heated until mid-March or early April, followed by an indeterminate hiatus when neither heat nor air-conditioning is provided to the air-conditioned buildings. When conditions warrant, the air-conditioning is turned on. (Last year, for example, the system did not begin cooling until approximately one week before spring semester final exams.) Residents may need to open their windows during unseasonably warm spring weather, due to predicted cooler temperatures, which will prohibit activation of the air-conditioning system. Once the air-conditionings system is running, it usually remains active until early October.
Please carefully consider these facts in determining whether to submit a special housing accommodation request involving an air-conditioned environment. Also, please be aware of the following:
1. Students who qualify for a special housing accommodation(s) will be assigned to the appropriate residence hall and your designation of a roommate will not be a consideration.2. For returning students who hold a “conditional housing contract” and have been approved for an air-conditioned residence hall, your housing assignments are not made until late summer and it is possible that your assignment may not be in an air-conditioned residence hall and that you will be placed on the waiting list for these residence halls.
Single Occupancy
All students, regardless of disability status, are expected to pay for the occupancy level they are assigned. Any student who lives in single-occupancy residential space will be charged the current room-rate for single occupancy. Students with disabilities who have asked for a single room are expected to pay the single-room rate, just as any other student. The accommodation is the assignment to the single-occupancy room, not charging a differential rate.
