A student may request housing accommodations due to a medical condition, disability, or other situation that may affect a student residing in campus housing. The SSD Housing Accommodation Committee follows a process that is individualized, interactive, and confidential.
Reasonable accommodations for a student with a disability may be granted based upon the impact of the condition, availability of space, and the timeliness of the request.
All students receive information in their online Housing contract form about the SSD housing accommodation request process.
The Housing Accommodation Request Packet is a downloadable PDF. Services for Students with Disabilities staff (phone: 540-231-3788, email: firstname.lastname@example.org) are available to answer questions or provide assistance during regular business hours: M-F, 8am-5pm.
Enrolled and Prospective students may consult with SSD about future housing accommodation requests at any time by appointment (540-231-3788 or email@example.com). If SSD determines that submitted documentation is insufficient to establish disability, SSD will communicate about the specific types of information that need to be provided, and assist the student with making a plan to be obtain it.
Students may submit housing accommodation requests at any time, year round, after a University housing contract for the relevant academic year has been signed/submitted. SSD will acknowledge receipt of each submitted request by email to the student. Students are encouraged to submit their housing accommodations requests after signing their housing contracts.
Living-Learning Communities may have established timelines or deadlines for implementing approved housing accommodations within their established residence hall rooms, which are limited in number by design. A student in any of these communities is strongly encouraged to communicate with their Program Director to discuss the established timeline or deadline for implementation of approved housing accommodations.
In general, housing accommodations are implemented to remove barriers in housing for students living on campus. Housing and Residence Life may consider release from the University housing contract if the University is unable to implement the reasonable accommodation(s) supported by SSD.
For the current academic year, the SSD Housing Accommodation Committee will consider a housing request after submission of a completed request packet (Student’s Form 1 and supporting documentation), SSD has confirmed the University housing contract with the Housing office, and the student has been invited to attend an interactive discussion regarding their situation. The Committee will make determinations of reasonable accommodations and notify students by email in a timely manner.
For the next academic year, the same general process, as above, is followed regarding Housing accommodation requests related to campus housing. The SSD Housing Accommodation Committee will consider a housing request after submission of a completed request packet (Student’s Form 1 and supporting documentation), SSD has confirmed the University housing contract for next year with the Housing office, and the student has been invited to attend an interactive discussion regarding their situation. The Committee will make determinations of reasonable accommodations and notify students by email in a timely manner.
The SSD office consults with prospective freshmen and transfer students at any time, upon request, by telephone or in-person. Prospective students are encouraged to schedule a consultation with a SSD disability counselor (540-231-3788; firstname.lastname@example.org). The Housing Accommodation Request Packet is required for consideration of specific accommodations after a prospective student accepts the Virginia Tech offer of admission. The Housing Accommodation Committee will proceed with the established process: confirm the University housing contract with the Housing office, engage the student in the interactive process, make determinations of reasonable accommodations and notify students by email in a timely manner.
